“Back then it was Soul, Funk, Disco, Jazz Funk and a bit of Dub and Reggae, but it wasn’t until the underground explosion of Acid House and the house scene hit the UK, that his love of music went to a deeper level. The feeling that he got from house music blew him away. It was so fresh, exciting and had so much positive, expressive energy to it, it changed his life and there was no going back. He became a dance music junkie, and even today he still gets that same feeling for dance music as he did back in the day.”

Between 1996-1999 I played a fair few slots in and around Birmingham to include The Dome II (named after the large metal round lighting rig around the dance floor), Pulse (now Zanzibar), Wobble, and Miss MoneyPennys @Bonds.

Now regularly in Coventry, with a fortnightly residency at Bar Coast, Dogma & a weekly slot Suzi Q’s, I was able to work alongside my long-term DJ partners, and very good friends, Huggy and Chelston, under the name; “The Soul Food Brothers”. Playing several warm up sets for God’s Kitchen, formally the Planet nightclub and former home of the iconic Eclipse, this was a massive influence in my passion for music & the rave scene back in its day. As a result I played at the Foundry, The Planet, The Glasshouse, and Careys.

In November 2016 I came out of retirement to play at the legendary Ministry of Sound, London, alongside my good friend Kuska playing for FunkDelux. Since my return I’ve had sets with Crazy Daisy’s, Gatecrashers Ruins afterparty, and Big Bamboo amongst others. While in Ibiza I played at Mambos & Es Paradis and on my return to the UK, Ministry of Sound summer festivals. With a monthly club classics night at The Pippin in Coventry in place along with being asked to perform at a charity event for old school Legend, Rob May, R.I.P. which was an honour, 2018 was a huge year.

In rolls 2019 which has started with a bang; joining Jealous Media, securing my own Bi-weekly show on AA1 radio, monthly slot on AATM radio (#JCSQUATER – a partner with Jelous Media Live DJ’s) along a guest slot at Mayhem Radio. Recently playing at Chic nightclub, now one of Birmingham’s top clubs, it’s set to be quite the year!

Reliability

First of all you want someone who is reliable. There is nothing worse than your DJ not showing up on your wedding day, party or event because there simply won’t be a party if your DJ is going to let you down.  Ask around; get recommendations from friends & family. Have they had good experiences with DJs before? They might be able to recommend someone that will do a great job!

Reviews

When searching on the Internet you will be bombarded with DJs offering their services. What can be really helpful is to search for genuine reviews. A DJ with years of experience will have lots of positive feedback and recommendations from his previous customers. If they don’t there is a reason!

Back up

Make sure back up DJs and equipment are included in the services you are offered. No one wants to be let down, but there might occur a situation where your DJ can’t make it whether because of illness or breakdown of transport or equipment. A professional DJ or DJ agency will always offer you back up.

Equipment

Ask what equipment and lighting (DJ Booth) the DJ uses and what he will bring to your party. It might not sound important to you in the first place, but listening to music through cheap & distorting speakers is irritating. Discuss how many people are attending and make sure the sound system is right for your size and quality party.

Experience & skills of a great DJ

Make sure your DJ has mixing skills and a large music library. A good DJ is capable of mixing tracks of different genres together seamlessly. With good mixing skills comes a great party. Anyone can put some music on but you book a professional DJ for making the music float nicely as this makes the atmosphere. Another very important ingredient is reading the crowd. A professional will have no problem to get people up and dancing in no time, and keep them there.

Price

Price. If you are after the lowest price rather than the importance of a professional, don’t expect to be impressed with the DJs skills or equipment. Good equipment, experience and professionalism come with a price. When you pay little money just be aware of the fact you very likely will get let down either in skills, equipment or no show.

These are just a few tips to get you started with your search to the right entertainer for your party.

One last tip! Get the right DJ. Search for someone that loves playing the music you like. You will have the best time with a DJ that gets enjoyment from entertaining you.

Sam was great, arrived on time, great attitude. And when we had issues with the power (one of the by products of being in a field!) he was a complete pro and worked everything out quickly and professionally.
