4 qualities that make a good DJ

If you’re looking to hire a DJ for a special birthday party or wedding then you want to make sure you choose the right person for the job. There are some key qualities that make a good DJ, so it’s a good idea to meet up with a potential DJ beforehand. Go for a coffee or a beer and have a good chat about what you’re looking for; as you get to know them on a personal level you’ll get a feel for how much justice they’ll do for your party! If you can go and see them DJ-ing somewhere before you book them that can also be useful too.

  • They look at home behind the decks: A good DJ should look comfortable behind the decks. If they come across as cool as a cucumber whilst seamlessly blending tracks into one another to keep the party going and the crowd dancing then you’ve probably got yourself a good one. The DJ should be able to interact with the crowd and know what to play next to get them going, without stressing about what track to play next.
  • A good DJ is sociable: A DJ provides a public service at one of the happiest occasions of a person’s life, so it’s important that they’re a happy, friendly person! If they seem perfectly at home with new people and keen to make new friends and network, then they’re likely to be good at what they do.
  • They carry on learning: Technology changes, musical trends change; but the most important quality in a DJ is the willingness to keep up with these changes and keep learning. If your DJ turns up with cassettes instead of a digital catalogue of tunes then you might want to find a new one!
  • They are passionate about music: A good DJ lives and breathes music, always seeking out the latest tunes and adding to their catalogue. You’ll get a feel for the passion a DJ has for music just by talking to them about their personal tastes, and what you want for your party etc.
